The Prospect Development Manager supporting the Fundraising team,this position will be follow a Hybrid working pattern with a London base.

The Fundraising Team

The DofE’s fundraising team raises £5m per year from Philanthropy and Major Gifts, Corporate Partnerships and Events. It is an ambitious team which creates long lasting relationships and delivers exceptional donor experiences. The team is a vital part of the charity and is pivotal in providing funds to underpin its strategy. Over the next 5 years the team will deliver funds of at least £25m to ensure the charity continues to deliver on its purpose. The strategy includes an ambition to diversify our income with Legacies and Endowment. A key focus will be the DofE’s 70th Anniversary in 2026.

Purpose

The purpose of this role is to support the fundraising team to generate significant new and sustainable income to support the charity’s Youth Without Limits Strategy. The principal areas of focus for prospect research are Philanthropy and Major Gifts, and Corporate Partnerships, the postholder will be expected to establish a new prospect research function for the DofE and to lead the prospect development strategy and its implementation for the fundraising division. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive programme of prospect identification, (including key influencers and connectors), research, analysis, and tracking, and playing a key role in building a strong base of support to enable the success of the growing fundraising programme.

Key Accountabilities

Strategy and planning responsibilities

Developing a comprehensive, proactive prospect research strategy, and to manage its implementation by developing detailed plan, setting objectives, targets, and performance standards, ensuring that such a strategy fits with the overall goals and culture of the charity.
Actively monitor progress against objectives and KPIs and report activity and achievements through quarterly reports and an annual report.
Ensure all Prospect Development practices are GDPR compliant and produce Data Protection Impact Assessments/Legitimate Interests Assessments as necessary when new or revised practices are being considered. Stay abreast of data protection legislation and update practices accordingly.

Prospect Management

Take ownership of the Prospect Management System and associated data structures in our CRM, currently Microsoft Dynamics, working closely with the data/insights team to maintain and update its structure to ensure it remains fit for purpose and evolves with our fundraising practices.
Track and report upon the full breadth of prospects in active management (pipeline, portfolio, and pool) including prospects aligned to particular fundraising priorities, e.g., the Endowment.
Lead quarterly pipeline reviews with each frontline fundraiser to ensure an accurate picture of the pipeline opportunity throughout the year including:

Encouraging accurate and realistic interpretations of likelihood of a gift, value or gift expected and likely timescale.
Supporting discussion on moves management e.g., how fundraisers can be best supported to advance relationships with prospects.
Ensure Microsoft Dynamics promptly reflects pipeline updates, including alignment with fundraising priorities, and prepare an update of insights from the quarterly reviews for the Division’s leadership.

Lead bi-monthly Major Gift meetings, in collaboration with the Head of Philanthropy and Director of Fundraising.
Lead pipeline strategy meetings for each of the Fundraising Division’s active fundraising priorities, in conjunction with the corresponding lead fundraiser.
Oversee uniform use of the database as regards the Prospect Management System including by leading training sessions for fundraisers/fundraising support to ensure that information in inputted consistently and correctly as well as monitoring best practice through cleaning and checking processes.
Prepare and effectively communicate insights and intelligence regarding the pipeline to the Divisional leadership, fundraisers, and colleagues more widely.
Annually review and update prospect management guidance documents.
Develop and implement prospect classifications/rating systems to help manage the portfolio most effectively, including gift capacities and levels of engagement.

Person Specification

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

Essential

Demonstrable experience of prospect research and management within the not-for-profit sector, the higher education, or cultural sectors.
Experience and understanding of the importance of technical expertise, data analysis and statistical knowledge to facilitate a sustained philanthropic income stream.
A sound understanding of the key philanthropic individuals and families and organisations based in the UK.
Highly experienced using a relational databases e.g., Microsoft Dynamics or other similar software for both inputting and analysis of data.
Experience of development Data Protection compliant prospect research techniques
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply knowledge creatively in new contents.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills with strong project management skills including managing budgets, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Knowledge of, and best practice in philanthropy and prospect development in the not-for-profit sector, or higher education or culture sectors.
Ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders.
Ability to plan and prioritise.
Results driven.
Team player.

Desirable:

Full UK Driving License.
Experience in using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database.
