We now have an exciting opportunity for a Optical Architect to join Airbus Defence and Space in Portsmouth. You will join our Earth Observation department and report to the Head of Instrumentation.

About the role

Primarily, you will lead the optical architecture and design activities within a specific area of a project, through all stages in the project development lifecycle (Phases 0, A/ B1, B2CDE). In addition, you will support the development of wider optical capability in our department through knowledge transfer, mentoring and lessons learned.

T asks & Accountabilities

  • Lead the optical architecture and design activities within a specific area of a project, through any and all stages in the project development lifecycle (Phases 0, A/ B1, B2/ C/ D/ E).

  • Lead and/ or review detailed optical analyses of space-based sensors, of space-based sensors, developing architectural concepts and designs in response to technical specifications, within payload design constraints. Solve optical issues with design.

  • Define the performance allocation between the various component of the optical configurations (telescope, spectrometers, mirrors, filters, optical components ).

  • Deliver outputs from assigned project work packages within cost, schedule and quality requirements.

  • Provide technical leadership of, coordinate and supervise other members of the project team in the optical design domain.

  • Interpret customer requirements and define optical system/ subsystems architectures and specifications for spacecraft instrumentation

  • Interface directly with the Customer team, within the framework of project protocols and communication channels, to demonstrate technical competence and credibility in the tasks we are performing.

  • Support the development of wider capability in our department in the optical systems domain through knowledge transfer, mentoring and lesson learned.

    You will be largely Portsmouth site-based, but should expect regular travel ( 5-10 per year) within UK and Europe. Travel will be to other Airbus sites, customer and supplier premises for project or functional reviews and support to integration and test.

    Required Skills & Experience

    • Proven experience working on optical instrumentation for space-based sensor systems

    • A good understanding of optical design, analyses methods and optical tolerances

    • Knowledge of fabrication and testing techniques for optical components and systems

    • Experience in hardware development
