How To Answer: “What Is Your Work Style?”

When you’re asked “What is your work style?” during a job interview, it can be a bit tricky to answer. The interviewer is trying to get a sense of how you work, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and how you might fit into the company culture. Here are a few tips for how to answer this question effectively:

Be honest

The most important thing is, to be honest about your work style. Don’t try to present yourself as something you’re not, or you’ll likely be found out later. If you’re someone who likes to work independently, say so. If you’re someone who thrives in a team environment, that’s great too. Just be honest about who you are. For example, “I would describe my work style as a balance of both independent and collaborative work. I enjoy taking on projects on my own and seeing them through to completion, but I also appreciate the value of working with a team to bring different perspectives to a project.”

Be specific

It’s not enough to simply say “I’m a team player” or “I’m a self-starter.” Provide specific examples of how you’ve demonstrated those traits in the past. For example, “I led a team of engineers to develop a new product, and we were able to complete it ahead of schedule by effectively communicating and delegating tasks amongst the team members.”

Highlight your flexibility

Even if you have a preferred work style, it’s important to be able to adapt to different situations. So, show that you can be flexible and that you’re willing to adjust your work style to meet the needs of the team or project. For example, “In my previous role, I was part of a cross-functional team where I had to adapt my work style to match the needs of the team. I found that I was able to collaborate effectively and bring my independent work experience to the table.”

Show how your work style aligns with the company’s culture

Do your research on the company and their culture, and show how your work style aligns with that. For example, “I know that your company values open communication and flexibility, and as someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, I believe I would be a great fit.”

Practice

Practice your answer ahead of time so you can give a clear, concise response. This will also help you feel more confident and comfortable during the interview.

Example answer

“I would describe my work style as a balance of both independent and collaborative work. I enjoy taking on projects on my own and seeing them through to completion, but I also appreciate the value of working with a team to bring different perspectives to a project. For example, in my previous role as a marketing coordinator, I was responsible for managing several campaign projects on my own, but I also made sure to involve other team members in the process, through regular check-ins and brainstorming sessions. This approach allowed us to deliver successful campaigns that met the needs of our clients and exceeded their expectations.”

By following these tips, you can demonstrate to the interviewer that you understand your own work style and how it can benefit the company. Remember, the key is, to be honest, and specific, and to show how your work style aligns with the company’s culture.
