How To Use LinkedIn Groups In Your Job Search

By Lauren @BubbleJobs

As we’ve said time and time again, LinkedIn is a key part of any job hunt. But it’s not just enough to set up your profile and wait for the messages to come rolling in from recruiters – you have to put yourself out there and increase your visibility, and using LinkedIn groups is a great way of doing this.

LinkedIn groups are really useful for building an online brand and presence, as well as showcasing your knowledge about the industry you want to work in – which is exactly what recruiters and hiring managers are looking for.

So here are a few tips on making the most of LinkedIn groups to maximise your chances of landing your dream job.

1) Join Relevant Groups

With over 1 million groups to choose from, it can be a bit daunting to decide which ones to join and contribute to, but it’s important that you only join relevant groups related to the industry you want to get into, as that’s where the hiring managers and recruiters you want to impress will be.

Join groups with lots of interaction and very little or no spam – you don’t want your thoughts and ideas to be lost among hundreds of spammy posts.

2) Take Part In Discussions

Taking part in active and engaging discussions will make you visible to hiring managers and recruiters in a good way – as long as what you’re saying is interesting and relevant.

It can be scary joining in in a discussion for the first time, so start off by joining active, flowing conversations with your insight as you’re more likely to get a reply.

However, don’t just comment for the sake of it. Think about your responses and what sort of image you want to portray.

3) Share Your Own Content

LinkedIn groups aren’t just about commenting on other people’s content and contributing to other users’ discussions… you want to put your own stamp of authority on the group as well.

A good way of doing this is to share relevant content you’ve created on your blog or another online publication in the group.

This not only shows off your writing skills, but it could also spark conversations and engagement. For this to happen, try and pick something that you’ve written about that people are passionate about and likely to comment on.

4) Don’t Spam

While it’s great to be active on LinkedIn groups, you don’t want to come across as spammy as this can really put recruiters and hiring managers off contacting you, which defeats the whole point of the activity.

Try and limit your discussion creation to once a day to avoid being blocked from the group for spamming.

Also, when commenting on others’ discussions, only do so when you have something insightful to add. It’s obvious when people are just commenting for the sake of it, and it won’t paint you in a positive light.

5) Check Out The Jobs Section

The Jobs section of a group is different from the main Jobs section of LinkedIn, as it’s where jobs are posted that may not appear in the main Jobs area.

Have a look at the Jobs Discussions section of this area to find hidden gem vacancies that you might not find anywhere else on the platform! Check out our Digital Careers group for good examples of this.

So there we go, some tips on how to make the most out of LinkedIn groups during your job search!
