Top 5 Soft Skills Every Digital Job Seeker Needs

By Lauren @BubbleJobs

As more and more digital opportunities become available and the industry continues to grow, a large focus has been placed on the technical skills job seekers need to land a role in the sector.

For example, the government’s new digital school curriculum focuses heavily on skills like coding and web development, and there are plenty of digital marketing, PPC or graphic design courses available to people of all ages.

But what about the softer skills? While it’s great that a candidate has all of the qualifications and skills the job requires, is it enough if they have no communication skills or can’t work as part of a team?

With that in mind, I’ve put together the top five soft skills every digital job seeker should have to give them the best chance of landing that dream digital job.

1) Creativity

As the digital industry is still relatively new, everyone is still learning and there are few right or wrong ways of doing things.

Because of this, one of the most important skills a digital worker can have is creativity, and the ability to come up with their own ideas in an ever-evolving and changing industry.

Whether it’s an innovative social media campaign, a fresh new website design or a unique paid search strategy – the digital industry is innovative in itself, so employers want candidates to be able to come up with follow through on their own ideas.

2) Self-Motivation

In a lot of companies, those working on the digital aspects of a business will be expected to have initiative and be able to plan their own workload.

This might be because senior staff are not as familiar with your particular niche, so can’t plan your work for you.

So, using your own initiative and being able to manage your own workload is really good soft skill to possess.

3) Communication

Working in digital, you’ll find that a lot of your time will be spent communicating with other departments, customers or clients, so having strong communication and interpersonal skills is a must.

Whether you’re working in social media conversing regularly with customers, or in something like eCommerce where you need to contact the likes of retail, finance and web development, communication is an integral part of the job.

Top Tip: Communication skills involve both written and verbal contact, so make sure you can demonstrate experience of both.

4) Flexibility

As I said before, the digital industry is constantly evolving and changing, so one of the best soft skills a digital candidate can have is flexibility.

Briefs from clients can be altered at any time and search or social algorithms can change at the drop of a hat, so it’s important that you’re not thrown by unexpected twists and turns.

Being able to adapt to any situation as and when it occurs is really important to an employer recruiting digital candidates, so being able to demonstrate this will stand you in good stead.

5) Patience

In a lot of digital roles, a large proportion of your work will be trial and error, as you try new strategies and tools, so a lot of patience is required in this industry.

Whether you’re trying out a new website design, app function or social media campaign, you’ll have to be patient as you test, analyse and adjust to try and find out what works best for your business.

So, showcasing that you’re calm and patient will put you in a good light in the recruiter’s eyes.

So there we go, the top five skills every digital job seeker needs! Do you agree with the list or have I missed anything out?
