How To Make Your Twitter Profile Appealing To Employers

If you’re job seeking, social media should definitely be an integral part of your job hunt strategy – and this includes Twitter.

Twitter is a great way to find the latest job vacancies, as well as engage with employers and build your personal brand. We’ve covered how to create the perfect job seeking strategy including social media before, but it’s not just what you do online, but how you present yourself.

A badly-presented Twitter profile can put an employer off hiring you just as much as a poor CV can, so it’s important to make sure you’re as professional as possible.

With that in mind, here are some tips on making your Twitter profile appealing to employers:

1) Get To The Point

You only have 160 characters in your Twitter bio to make yourself stand out, so it’s important to be short, snappy and to the point, so choose your words wisely.

Some good things to include in your bio are your stage in your career (whether that be recent grad or your current job title), and what sort of position you’re looking for.

For example, a good Twitter bio would say something like “Recent grad – passionate about social media. Seeking entry-level job opportunities in digital marketing in London.”

2) Don’t Be Afraid To Show Your Personality

Just because employers will be looking at your Twitter profile, that doesn’t mean you have to be bland and stuffy to appear professional.

Twitter is a lot more laid back than LinkedIn, but not as personal as Facebook, so finding the right balance is vital.

Avoid wishy-washy tidbits like “Dreamer, writer, wanderer” – it doesn’t make you sound deep or interesting, it makes you sound pretentious!

Instead, maybe mention your favourite sports team, food or hobby. For example, “Liverpool fan, cake lover, jewellery maker” tells the employer a lot more about you as a person.

3) Choose Your Website Carefully

Another good thing about Twitter bios is that they give you the option to include a link to a website that doesn’t use up your 160 characters.

This is great because it allows a recruiter to find out more about you if your bio and activity appeals to them, but it’s important to point them to the right website.

For example, if you have your own website with your portfolio and CV on it, it would make sense to link to that. Or, if you are looking for copywriting/content jobs, perhaps pointing them to your blog would be most effective.

However, if you’re not sure what to put as your website, a link to your LinkedIn profile is a good idea as it gives a recruiter instant access to your CV – result!

4) Be Professional

Even though Twitter is more of a personal, social platform than LinkedIn, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t maintain a certain level of professionalism in your profile.

Avoid swearing in your bio, using a boozy picture as your profile picture or generally posting anything you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see.

Remember: Twitter is a public platform and should be treated as such!
