Graduates: How To Prepare For Your First Job Interview

By Lauren @BubbleJobs

Your first proper job interview after university is a daunting prospect, but now is the time you’ll start applying for graduate jobs and attending interviews and assessment centres, so it’s important to be prepared.

The graduate job market is extremely competitive, so it’s not just enough to rock up to an interview and try to wing it – you have to put in some work beforehand to make sure you’re on the ball the minute you step foot into that interview room.

With that in mind, here are my top tips on preparing for your first job interview after graduating.

Research The Company

One of the most important things you need to do before any interview is to find out as much as possible about the organisation you’ve applied to – and this is especially true when it comes to graduate interviews.

As you won’t have much professional experience to talk about, this is a great opportunity to impress the interviewer with your knowledge.

Check out the company’s website to get a feel for their ethos and culture as well as any recent news or press releases about the business.

Top Tip: Set up a Google alert for the business so you’re kept totally up-to-date with any news surrounding the company.

Prepare Answers To Common Questions

While every interview is different, there are a few questions that are bound to pop up in every one.

From the classic questions like “Why do you want to work here?” to the more obscure ones such as “What motivates you?”, there are endless things you can be asked, but it’s good to have a few answers prepared so you don’t draw a blank in the room.

Check out the interview advice section of our blog where we’ve covered how you can answer lots of different popular interview questions.

Plan Your Journey

One of the worst things you can do on the day of an interview is be late – it gives a terrible first impression and makes you seem sloppy and unprofessional.

To avoid this, you need to plan your journey to the interview location using something like Google Maps, and give yourself plenty of time to arrive to ensure you don’t get stuck in traffic or hit any other delays.

If at all possible, do a trial run of the journey at a similar time so you know what to expect in terms of traffic, time etc.

Match Up Your Skills To The Job Description

You should have already done this in your cover letter, but if you haven’t, it’s a good idea to go through the job requirements and criteria and write down your suitability for the role based on your skills and what the company are looking for in a perfect candidate.

By doing this before the interview, you’ll be fully prepared to sell yourself and will be confident that you can do the job, which will come across to the interviewers.

If you’re worried about forgetting any of this, be sure to write it down and take it with you to the interview so you can glance at it quickly before you head into the room.

So there we go, some tips on how to prepare for your first job interview as a graduate!
