When applying for social media manager jobs, lots of people make the mistake of thinking they're eligible because they know what things like Facebook and Twitter are and how to use them... but social media manager jobs are much more than this. When applying for this sort of role, you need to have commercial social media experience (paid or unpaid) under your belt and you need to be able to demonstrate that you understand the difference between personal and business social media. Similarly, you'll need to show you've got experience in creating and implementing social media strategies for clients (the more diverse the better!) and you'll be able to demonstrate how successful your social media campaigns have been - we're talking facts and figures here!
It goes without saying that you'll need commercial experience across a range of platforms, particularly Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr and Tumblr, and you'll need to have good attention to detail - after all, your posts are going to be seen by hundreds, if not thousands, of potential customers every day. You'll also need to show you've got strong copywriting skills (blogging is part and parcel of some social media jobs), you've got excellent communication skills and you're also great at managing clients and relationships. Lastly, when applying for social media manager vacancies, you'll need to show you can work well as part of a team and keep calm under pressure - a knee-jerk tweet response to a customer complaint is never a good idea!
Community Manager CV Tips
Strong copywriting skills, impeccable attention to detail and strong commercial social media experience are all essential when it comes to community manager jobs so you need to ensure you've got all these things on your CV. Similarly, a lot of employers look for candidates who have strong communication skills, have a great writing style and are proficient in social listening and management tools like HootSuite, Conversocial, Facebook Insights and Simply Measured.
Although the role of a community manager normally fits into a much larger team, employers normally look for candidates who are capable of working independently and who have a good understanding of how social media can be used to engage and interact with potential customers. To really catch a potential employer's eye when it comes to this type of role, you'll also have strong content management experience, a proven track record in community management and strong social strategy planning skills.
