Job Role

Adult Community Learning Essex (ACL Essex) is a £10m business, run by teaching and learning professionals, providing Essex residents with the opportunity to upskill, retrain, learn something new and engage in the community, enter the workplace and contribute to the Essex economy and communities.

The Instructional Designer job will play a key part in creating online learning modules to support adult learning and apprentice courses. Under the responsibility of the Business Improvement Officer for Digital Technology/Business Process and eLearning, you will work closely with Curriculum Co-ordinators and tutors/assessors to deliver identified projects to support ACL Essex’s digital strategy.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Create engaging online learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention
  • Work with subject matter experts and identifying target audience’s training needs
  • State instructional end goals and create content that matches them
  • Visualise instructional graphics, the user interface and the finished product
  • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and context
  • Apply testing instructional design theories, practices and methods
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process
  • Create supporting material/media
  • Decide on the criteria used to judge learner’s performance and develop assessment instruments
  • Maintain project documentation and course folders

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Proven experience of instructional design and instructional technology
  • Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and methods
  • Basic HTML programming knowledge
  • Solid knowledge of course development software and at least one Learning Management System (preferably Moodle)
  • Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts
  • Degree in instructional design, education technology or similar is preferred

As part of employment with Essex County Council (ECC) should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service. The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate.
