If you’re looking to expand your business in 2013, chances are you’ll be thinking about taking on new employees at some point over the next 12 months. When this time comes, it can be tempting to just jump on the nearest generic job board, pop in your vacancy and credit card details and click “submit” but I’m here to tell you that you could be making a big mistake.
It’s not that generic job boards don’t work – you’ve seen the size of them, they’re obviously doing something right – it’s just they’re not that effective when it comes to finding high quality candidates in a specific niche.
If you’re looking for shed-loads of applications from every Tom, Dick and Harry that sees the advert, regardless of whether they have what you’re looking for, then by all means, visit the monsters of the job board industry (see what I did there? ;))… but if you’re looking for high quality candidates that actually possess the skills and experience that can make a difference to your business, it’s definitely about time you considered using a niche job board.
With niche job boards, the clue’s in the name – they’re niche! They only ever advertise jobs from one particular sector or industry area which means they tend to come into their own when you’re looking for a very specific candidate to join your business. Why? Because unlike those huge generic job boards that advertise every single job under the sun and attract every job seeker going, they only ever advertise jobs in a certain niche which means they only ever attract candidates within their specific niche.
It all comes back to the old “quality over quantity” mantra. Generic job boards might attract hundreds of thousands, if not millions of visitors every day compared to niche job boards but it’s niche job boards that tend to attract the quality candidates – the ones that have been working in the industry for years and know the biggest names and most important specialist recruiters always opt for niche job board when it comes to advertising their jobs.
Think about it; would you rather receive hundreds of applications from candidates that are OK but not really what you’re looking for… or a handful of high quality CVs from candidates who have exactly what you’re looking for? I’ll leave that one with you…
While we’re talking about the benefits of using niche job boards, it’s also worth talking about how much promotion your job advert will actually receive. Stick a job on a generic site and more often than not it’ll just sit there until it expires. Alternatively… stick your job on a niche job board and, cash permitting, it’ll be promoted using the board’s social media accounts and will be sent around to various aggregators (Indeed and Co.) so it gets even more exposure! Think about it – the more eyes you get on your job ad, the more likely you are to find the right candidate – woo hoo!
Last but not least, when it comes to niche job boards, the majority tend to have their own blogs onsite (like this one!) which have a dedicated industry following and include posts on everything from the latest industry news to sector-specific recruitment advice – this means they tend to have an extended on-target audience who might not be active job seekers, but who might visit the blog and then spot a job they like the sound of and apply. This does happen – believe us!
So there you go; next time you need to recruit for new employees, it might just be worth giving niche job boards (a la Bubble) a go!
