What does a Magento developer do?

By Amy @BubbleJobs

Specialist Magento developers are one of the most sought after web developers at the moment thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of e-commerce. But what exactly do they do and do you need one for your online business?

If you haven’t already guessed, Magento developers work with the e-commerce web application platform Magento. Originally launched in 2008, Magento is a feature-rich platform which is built on open-source technology – quite simply it allows online merchants to control the look, functionality and content of their online store.

Lots of e-commerce business owners choose to take on specialist Magento developers because they have the technical know-how to get the most out of the multi-faceted platform. From SEO and catalogue-management to marketing and basic administration, Magento can be quite complex but Magento developers have the skills and knowledge to make it look a doddle.

If you employ Magento developers from the off they can be an invaluable piece of the puzzle when it comes to building an e-commerce store that appeals to both customers and search engines. Magento developers can help you with key tasks like setting up your website and finding a suitable host that can support Magento stores.

Because Magento offers an incredible amount of flexibility, it can be scaled back to suit any business – this means that developers have to work out which is the right Magento solution for your company and apply it to your online store. Rather than using a default template, they can also custom-build a store for you based on your particular needs and business values.

In addition to building an effective ‘back-end’ system, Magento developers are also experts when it comes to designing the ‘front-end’ of your site – they know what design elements need to be included to support Magento and know how to design a customer-friendly online store that has excellent user-experience built in as standard.

Magento developers also spend a great deal of time ensuring the platform is compatible with the existing products and services in your database – no easy feat. They also stay abreast of the latest extensions and themes and apply these to your online store as and when necessary.

I don’t know if I entirely agree with this, there are some good points about the importance of magento specialist and getting a good one is a rare find, Magento is built upon the popular Zend frame work which many senior php developers will understand very well, the benefit with Magento dedicated is knowledge of the approach magento took in their implementation and knowing your way around their platform. I don’t think any core developer should be getting into the front end build or design in fact they should stay well clear, A good designer will have a better understanding of UX and Information Architecture, how design will best drive purchase etc.

I Have designed a few magento websites and built a couple to but as a designer I would never profess to understand CMS implementation or how stock systems work etc.

    To summarize

I would agree find a good magento developer if not get a very senior php developer who has a good understanding of MVC frameworks.

Leave design to designer don’t let developers design too many finger in too many pies loose core focus.

Minor point on a good article.
