If you want help…..ask someone helpful

It’s the moral of a story and currently doing the rounds on a radio advert but it got me thinking. When you’re trying to grow a business one of the most critical things you need, (apart from finances) are the right people, with the right experience at the right time.

Sounds obvious I suppose, but there are a lot of business owners who spend a lot of time, money and effort, constantly battling away, trying to grow their new ecommerce or social media business feeling like they’re constantly rowing upstream. Now I’m not saying running your own business is easy street but I do believe there are easier ways of doing things.

The problem is that as the entrepreneur who came up with the ‘genius’ idea you can become very easily blinkered. You can be fooled into believing that only your way is the right way and that you are the only person who can possibly know how to turn this idea into the next Facebook. Obviously, you can argue that in some cases this is the best way to run your business (I sure Mr. Jobs would agree) but I would say there are / were far more fledgling business that were on the road to being ‘the next big thing’ but didn’t quite make it because they were too focussed on the idea and didn’t pay enough attention to how they were going to convert it into reality.

In this fast moving world of the web economy and online enterprise the crucial thing is to do things right and to do things fast. If you’re just taking your first steps then how can you possibly be the only one who knows everything that you need to know? You can’t…..and if you say you do I don’t believe you.

So what do you do? Well you go and recruit the right people to join your business right? ….Maybe. If you have the funds, the office space, the capability and most importantly the time to search for the right people, to interview them, to negotiate offers, to wait for them to finish their notice periods etc etc, then yes you can go ahead and recruit your dream team.

But wait. You haven’t got the time. You need all of this ‘done yesterday’. You need to be executing your strategy now. So now what? Well, it doesn’t take much of a look in the market to find a whole world full of freelancers, self-employed individuals, niche consultancies and agencies who have exactly the experience you need and who are constantly looking for the next exciting business they can help to grow. There are business developers, social media consultants, web developers, futurologists, SEO and PPC experts….there really is no base that can’t be covered. Seriously, no matter how specialised, or niche your business is, there is most probably someone out there who is ready, willing and able to help you.

This is particularly evident in the web, ecommerce and social media markets. These are high growth industries and more importantly businesses in this space need to grow, evolve and change at an astonishing rate.

So you need to act smart and act quickly. Search around for great sources of information and people like Bubble, join online communities, ask questions, tell people what you are doing. Help is there to be found and if you do you’ll soon be on your way to realising the dream which started as a scribble on the back of a beer mat.

i feel that putting staff in who fill each role to the job title is not always the best way to do it, bringing in all these “random” people to run your business for you can leave you on the outside looking in, it also does not mean that they will all get on and create the best working environment. Whereas building a team from people you know and trust can be a massive bonus, they can be trained to fill the roles and provide a solid workforce which u can rely on.
